25 Notorious Unsolved Crimes & Mysteries

Search for the Zodiac

Starting on December 20, 1968, an unknown man known as the Zodiac Killer began terrorizing the San Francisco Bay Area. On that night, the Zodiac shot and killed two people — David Arthur Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16. On August 1, 1969, the killer sent three letters to newspaper companies around the city. Containing multiple cryptograms/ciphers, the letters were used to taunt investigators and scare the public.

While the Zodiac’s last of five confirmed murders occurred in 1969, he claims to have committed 37 murders during his reign of terror. The last confirmed letter written by the Zodiac was postmarked January 29, 1974. The identity of the Zodiac Killer remains a mystery to this day, but the case remains open.
