The Top 10 Athletes Who Called It Quits Way Too Early (PHOTOS)

10. Michael Jordan – Chicago Bulls

After three consecutive NBA titles, Michael Jordan and the Bulls seemed unstoppable. Then, on October 6, 1993, Jordan announced his retirement from basketball to pursue a career in baseball. Citing his father’s murder and loss of desire for the game, Jordan spent a little more than a year away from basketball before announcing his return in 1995.

After losing to the Orlando Magic in the playoffs shortly after his return, Jordan led the Bulls to another 3-peat starting the following year, cementing his spot atop the basketball world. Jordan retired a second time following his last championship, before returning with the Washington Wizards in 2001.

Widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all-time, MJ would’ve been much higher on this list had he never returned in 1993.
