When people think about July 4th, many things come to mind.
The colors of red, white, and blue are seen everywhere. You can expect a plethora of fireworks shows, reminders of patriotism and freedom, and likely some poolside fun accompanied by drinks and food.
Lastly, you’ll also think about the 4th of July Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition on Coney Island in New York. Joey Chestnut has taken the mantle as the top dog in this event — routinely wolfing down 60+ hot dogs in 10 minutes. Well, much to the chagrin of those watching from home and in attendance, this year’s tournament will not feature the GOAT of the event.
According to a report from the New York Post, the 16-time winner of the event will not be participating in this year’s Hot Dog Eating Competition. The event — sponsored by Nathan’s Hot Dogs — will be without Chestnut for the simple fact that he signed a brand deal with a rival hot dog company.
Chestnut recently inked an agreement with Impossible Foods to represent the plant-based vegan hot dog. Reportedly, Chestnut made $200,000 for competing in last year’s event. He also reportedly was offered $1.2 million to compete in the next four contests. However, due to Chestnut’s choice to represent the plant-based dog, a new winner will be crowned this year.
