Released in 1989, the original SimCity marked a pivotal moment in PC gaming, laying the groundwork for the city-building genre — inspiring modern games such as Cities: Skylines. Its innovative gameplay allowed players to design and manage their own cities, setting a new standard for simulation games. SimCity’s success led to a series of spin-offs and sequels, including the popular The Sims franchise, which further expanded its legacy by allowing players to control the lives of individual Sims. Interestingly enough, SimCity was initially developed as a tool for urban planners, not as an entertainment video game.
