The NFL Combine always yields surprises, but no one could have predicted what an unidentified Atlanta Falcons coach asked cornerback Eli Apple. Speaking in an interview with Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, Apple detailed his sit-down with the Falcons.
“The Falcons coach, one of the coaches, was like, ‘So do you like men?’ It was like the first thing he asked me. It was weird. I was just like, ‘No.’ He was like, ‘If you’re going to come to Atlanta, sometimes that’s how it is around here. You’re going to have to get used to it.
Whether or not it was a terrible attempt at humor by the member of Atlanta’s organization, it still comes as completely inappropriate. Apple tried to brush past it, saying, “I guess he was joking, but they just ask most of these questions to see how you’re going to react.”
The former Ohio State Buckeye seems to be handling the mishap with grace, but Falcons head coach Dan Quinn didn’t hold back his anger on the matter. “I am really disappointed in the question that was asked by one of our coaches.”
Quinn continued, “I have spoken to the coach that interviewed Eli Apple and explained to him how inappropriate and unprofessional this was. I have reiterated this to the entire coaching staff and I want to apologize to Eli for this even coming up. This is not what the Atlanta Falcons are about and it is not how we are going to conduct ourselves.”
Expert scouts project Apple to be a mid-first round pick after an impressive showing at the combine in Indianapolis. The Falcons currently sit with the 17th pick in the draft, but aren’t expected to try and upgrade at the cornerback position.
After such an awful first impression, that probably comes as good news to both sides.
