The worst-kept secret in the NFL has now been made official.
According to reports, the New York Jets acquired Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick. The deal reunited Adams with longtime friend and former QB Aaron Rodgers.
The Jets (2-4) are in a bit of a tailspin. After firing head coach Robert Saleh, the team lost to the rival Bills on Monday night. Rodgers had begun getting a bit prickly through the media — calling out receiver Mike Williams in particular for seemingly running the wrong route.
Adams and Rodgers have a tried and true chemistry built over time for years dating back to their days in Green Bay together. The duo suited up in Green Bay for eight years with one another. Five of these years resulted in Pro Bowl appearances for Adams. In 2020, he had a spectacular season in which he caught 18 TDs and a career-high 115 receptions.
Adams has been nicked up with various injuries over the past two seasons. His level of play has dropped, and those wonder whether it can be attributed to the Raiders being a relative mess, or Adams simply slowing down as he approaches age 32.
Regardless, this is another attempt by New York to appease their aging quarterback. You’d think this would jump-start an offense in desperate need of a jolt. Despite Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson present, the offense hasn’t looked stellar. Adams has the trust of Rodgers, and as such those two should be able to produce at a relatively high clip. Whether that results in a playoff berth or not is up for debate.
Adams is under contract for the rest of this year, and the following two years.
