Sources: Russell Wilson to Sign with Steelers

According to Russell Wilson and NFL sources, the nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion intends to join the Pittsburgh Steelers when free agency officially begins.

Wilson is set to ink a contract for one year at the veteran’s minimum rate, totaling $1.2 million. Despite the Denver Broncos informing him of his impending release last week, they will continue to cover the bulk of Wilson’s $37.8 million salary as he dons the black and yellow of the Steelers.

Shortly after news broke of his decision Sunday night, Wilson confirmed the move on X: “Year 13. Grateful.”

Wilson, with permission from the Broncos, engaged in a marathon meeting with Steelers officials in Pittsburgh for over six hours last Friday. Among those present were head coach Mike Tomlin and the newly appointed offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

Wilson joins a quarterback room where Kenny Pickett, the Steelers’ first-round pick in 2022, stands as the sole quarterback currently under contract. Mason Rudolph, who started three games for the Steelers last season, is set to enter free agency.

At 35 years old, Wilson’s departure from Denver was imminent after being notified last week that the franchise was ready to move on following a tumultuous two-season stint marked by an 11-19 record in his starts and zero playoff appearances. Before being benched to end the 2023 season, Wilson tallied 3,070 passing yards along with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Pittsburgh is set to visit Denver in 2024 — setting up a probably primetime showdown between Wilson and his former team.
