The 2024 NFL season is finally here, and Week 1 offered plenty of intriguing match-ups. From a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game to Aaron Rodgers’ much-anticipated return against a familiar foe, we’ll run through each game providing a quick recap, along with who came out on top. Let’s dive right in!
Baltimore Ravens @ Kansas City Chiefs
The Ravens-Chiefs showdown to kick off the NFL season ended up being as good as advertised. Isaiah Likely’s toes feet being two inches too long was the difference between the Chiefs winning and the Ravens attempting a two-point conversion for the win. While neither team played their absolute best football, both looked more than capable of returning to the AFC Championship Game this season.
Final Score: 27-20 Chiefs
Green Bay Packers @ Philadelphia Eagles
The field may not have been great, but for the first 59 minutes and 45 seconds, the NFL’s first game in Brazil was a huge success. The back and forth showdown came down to the final seconds, but a Jordan Love MCL injury overshadowed a thrilling game. Saquon Barkley was sensational, the Eagles’ offense overall looked dynamic, and if the defense improves even slightly, this team is a Super Bowl threat.
Final Score: 34-29 Eagles
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Atlanta Falcons
The Kirk Cousins era in Atlanta got off to a rough start, with Atlanta’s offense getting completely smothered by T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh defense. Zero touchdowns and underwhelming play from back-up quarterback Justin Fields was still enough for the Steelers to get the win.
Final Score: 18-10 Steelers
Arizona Cardinals @ Buffalo Bills
If Week 1 was any indication, Josh Allen will be winning the NFL MVP award this season if Buffalo is going to make the postseason. The quarterback played Superman en route to four touchdowns and completely carrying the team on his back. The Cardinals put up a good fight in the most entertaining game of the morning slate, but Allen was simply too much for Arizona to handle.
Final Score: 34-28 Bills
Tennessee Titans @ Chicago Bears
It certainly was an ugly debut for No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, but Chicago’s defense and special teams units saved the day. An awful Will Levis pick-six and a blocked punt scored by Simone Biles’ husband were enough to overcome Caleb’s 93 passing yards on 29 attempts (yikes). A win is a win though, and the Bears have to be feeling like they stole one here.
Final Score: 24-17 Bears
New England Patriots @ Cincinnati Bengals
The worst performance of Week 1 was undoubtedly the Bengals. Taking on a Jacoby Brissett-led squad with no real playoff aspirations, the Bengals laid a complete egg and couldn’t get anything going on offense. Burrow and the Bengals have become notorious for slow starts, but this loss was inexcusable.
Final Score: 16-10 Patriots
Minnesota Vikings @ New York Giants
If anyone could compete with the Bengals for the dubious title for worst Week 1 showing, it would be the Giants. Daniel Jones clearly isn’t the answer, and the Giants are fully on 1st pick watch. The Vikings looked great, but with Darnold’s track record, it’s hard not to think most of this could be attributed to how bad New York is.
Final Score: 28-6 Vikings
Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts
This AFC South showdown was a good reminder that this will be one of the most competitive divisions in football this season. CJ Stroud and the Texans ultimately eked out the victory, as the Colts’ big plays on offense weren’t enough. Neither defense played great, but both young teams will continue to improve as the year goes on.
Final Score: 29-27 Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars @ Miami Dolphins
A surprisingly slow start from Miami’s high-flying offense had the Dolphins on the ropes. Ultimately, it was the defense that managed to keep them in the game, only for an inevitable 80–yard TD from Tyreek Hill to steal a victory. Jacksonville will be feeling like they let one slip away, but the defense has to be happy containing last season’s #2 offense to 20 points.
Final Score: 20-17 Dolphins
Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints
We may only be three weeks away from full panic mode with Bryce Young. The Panthers somehow looked even worse than last year’s 2-15 squad, and the script looked the exact same for their franchise QB – constant pressure, poor decision-making and no playmakers to throw to. Carolina head coach Dave Canales certainly has his work cut out for him.
Final Score: 47-10 Saints
Las Vegas Raiders @ Los Angeles Chargers
Was there ever a doubt Jim Harbaugh would win in his return to the NFL? It was a true Harbaugh-style game, with the Chargers’ defense looking significantly better than it has in years past. J.K. Dobbins carried the offense, and Gardner Minshew and Co. committed three critical turnovers that cost them the game.
Final Score: 22-10 Chargers
Denver Broncos @ Seattle Seahawks
The Bo Nix era did not get off to a pretty start. Two interceptions and 138 passing yards on 42 attempts still doesn’t tell the whole story of how overmatched the rookie quarterback looked. On the other side, the Seahawks’ offense looked rusty, but finally started clicking in the second half to secure the victory. Neither team will be thrilled with how they played in this one.
Final Score: 26-20 Seahawks
Dallas Cowboys @ Cleveland Browns
How soon is too soon for calls to bench Deshaun Watson? The Cleveland offense was abysmal, struggling to do anything more than throw three-yard check-downs against a stout Dallas defense. All things considered, Cleveland’s defense still played well, but was consistently put in tough spots against a dynamic Cowboys offense. Slated to be one of the better games of Week 1, this was a dominant performance by the Cowboys.
Final Score: 33-17 Cowboys
Washington Commanders @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jayden Daniels may have played the best of the three starting rookie quarterbacks in Week 1, but he joined Bo Nix on the losing side. Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay offense were simply too much for the Commanders’ defense to contain. The Bucs had everything working on offense, and certainly look like the team to beat once again in the NFC South.
Final Score: 37-20 Buccaneers
Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit Lions
The Matthew Stafford-Jared Goff added another entertaining chapter on Sunday Night Football. The first overtime game of the 2024 NFL season was a back-and-forth affair that ultimately came down to winning the coin toss in OT. Luck was on the Lions’ side, and they marched straight down the field for a touchdown in front of the home crowd. To the surprise of most, it was the defenses that shined in this one, and it feels like we will be seeing these two square off again at some point in the postseason.
Final Score: 26-20 Lions
