According to league sources, the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh Tuesday morning. With Saleh in charge, the Jets are 2-3 to start the season.
In less than four seasons as the coach of the Jets, Saleh was 20-36 and failed to produce a winning season or a playoff appearance. With a future Hall of Famer, Aaron Rodgers, at quarterback, the Jets were expected to contend in 2024 — their performance through five games resulted in Saleh’s firing.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will serve as interim head coach. New York next plays Monday against the Buffalo Bills. At 3-2, the Bills currently lead the AFC East — meaning the winner of Monday’s game will end the night atop the division.
Saleh was hired to coach the Jets in 2021 following a four-year stint as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Following a 4-13 record in his debut season, Saleh coached the Jets to a 7-10 mark in both 2022 and 2023.
Known for his defensive knowledge, Saleh failed to produce a good offense in his three years as HC. Including the five games thus far in 2024, the Jets have had a bottom-10 scoring offense in each season under Saleh — they currently rank 25th.
“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets. I thanked him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction,” owner Woody Johnson said in a statement.
“Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season. He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason.”
