If we learned anything from the Panthers-Giants game and ensuing media coverage this past week, Josh Norman isn’t one to be bashful. Norman pulled no punches on and off the field concerning Odell Beckham Jr., so it doesn’t come as much of a shock that Carolina’s shutdown corner is mixing it up with another star receiver this week.
Approaching the Week 16 NFC South clash, Norman and Falcons receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White have exchanged a bit of trash talk. Jones and White seemed to question Norman’s elite level, referencing Carolina’s Cover 2 scheme as the main factor for the brash corner’s sudden rise to stardom.
Of course, Norman retorted, praising Jones’ place among the top receivers in the league, while referring to White as the Falcons “fifth receiver.” While that may be a bit of a stretch, White is clearly having a poor 2015 campaign. Even with defenses strictly game-planning for Julio, the 34-year-old simply can’t make an impact.
Carolina’s defensive scheme has Norman occupy one side of the field, so there will come a time when the potential Defensive Player of the Year will match up with the veteran wide out. Although their careers seem to be trending in opposite directions, White’s competitive fire and Pro Bowl pedigree could give him enough tools to get the better of the star corner this coming Sunday.
White will certainly need to if the Falcons are to have any chance of handing the Panthers their first loss of the season.
