24. Mike Bloomgren — Rice
Bloomgren was once an elite assistant coach at Stanford. During the days when Andrew Luck dominated on The Farm, it was Bloomgren in charge of the play-calling responsibilities. This was a guy who preached execution, toughness, and chemistry. After seven years in Palo Alto, Bloomgren got his first head coaching gig at Rice. Having come from a school which similarly values education, people thought Bloomgren would be a great fit. As fate would have it, things aren’t exactly going to plan.
In Bloomgren’s first three years with Rice, he accumulated a 7-23 record. Early in Year 4 (as of Oct. 7, 2021), the Owls are sitting at 2-3. With Rice not having exceptionally high standards for its football team, Bloomgren’s job might not even be in question. However, we can’t look past how dreadful this program has been.
