New Arena’s Top 25 College Football Poll After Week 7

Here’s a look at New Arena’s Top 25 Poll for Week 8 of the 2018-2019 College Football season:

25. San Diego State Aztecs

Week 7 result: Defeated Air Force 21-17
Up next: vs. San Jose State
                                Trend: NR

Since losing to Stanford in Week 1, the Aztecs have reeled off five-straight wins. The Aztecs’ two toughest remaining games (@ Fresno State, vs. Hawaii) both come at the end of the season. The four games in-between should serve as a nice tune-up.

24. Washington State Cougars

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: vs. Oregon
                        Trend: NR

The Cougars are surprisingly off to a 5-1 start. A win over Oregon this weekend could catapult the Cougars into a great position in the Pac-12 North. Currently tied atop the division, Wazzu controls its destiny should it win out.

23. Michigan State Spartans

Week 7 result: Defeated Penn State 21-17
Up next: vs. Michigan
                        Trend: NR

A dramatic touchdown with under 20 seconds left gave the Spartans their biggest victory of the season. With games against Michigan and Ohio State still remaining, the Spartans are still alive in the Big Ten East. However, if Sparty has any hope of upsetting Michigan, they must find success on the ground — something they have struggled to do thus far.

22. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: @ LSU
                                Trend: NR

The Bulldogs come out of their bye week with another enormous task. Nick Fitzgerald and company travel to Baton Rouge to face LSU. The Tigers will be full of confidence following their dominating victory over Georgia. A win at Death Valley would do wonders for Mississippi State’s program.

21. Iowa Hawkeyes

Week 7 result: Defeated Indiana 42-16
Up next: vs. Maryland
                                Trend: NR

Typically reliant on their defense, the Hawkeyes have begun to impose their will offensively. Led by quarterback Nate Stanley, Iowa is averaging nearly 32 PPG. Their loss to Wisconsin hurts their chances of winning the Big Ten West, but this team appears poised to make a run.

20. South Florida Bulls

Week 7 result: Defeated Tulsa 25-24
Up next: vs. UConn
                            Trend: +4

USF overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun the Hurricanes in come-from-behind fashion. UConn shouldn’t pose many problems for the Bulls this week. However, USF must be careful to not look ahead to next week — as a showdown with the 5-1 Houston Cougars awaits.

19. Texas A&M Aggies

Week 7 result: Defeated South Carolina 26-23
Up next: BYE
Trend: +4

After dropping two games early to Clemson and Alabama, A&M has rallied to win three in-a-row heading into their bye. Jimbo Fisher’s team has improved throughout the year, and currently trails only Alabama in the SEC West.

18. Penn State Nittany Lions

Week 7 result: Lost to Michigan State 21-17
Up next: @ Indiana
                                Trend: -9

Back-to-back heartbreaking losses have essentially ended the Nittany Lions’ season. If James Franklin’s men can’t overcome their emotions, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the team collapse.

17. Cincinnati Bearcats

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: @ Temple
                 Trend: +5

If Cincinnati can avoid a letdown against Temple, there is a chance the Bearcats will be a top-15 team headed into their games against USF and UCF. Michael Warren has been a beast — 664 rushing yards and 11 TD —  but Cincy will go as far as their defense can take them.

16. NC State Wolfpack

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: @ Clemson
                      Trend: +4

NC State has had an extra week to prepare for Clemson. Unfortunately, the Tigers also had last week off. A win over Clemson could be a program-changer for Dan Doeren’s program. A loss, however, would just be another reminder that they aren’t in Clemson’s stratosphere.

15. Kentucky Wildcats

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: vs. Vanderbilt
                                Trend: +5

The Wildcats have had plenty of time to get over their deflating loss to Texas A&M. With two very winnable games (vs. Vanderbilt, @ Missouri) standing in-between their heavyweight matchup with Georgia, Kentucky will have ample opportunity to get the bitter taste of defeat out of its mouth.

14. West Virginia Mountaineers

Week 7 result: Lost to Iowa State 30-14
Up next: BYE
                            Trend: -7

The Mountaineers picked a poor time to lay an egg. Will Grier was limited to 100 yards through the air as WVU struggled its way to 152 total yards of offense. With games against Texas and Oklahoma still remaining, there is time for the Mountaineers to rebound. Unfortunately, their embarrassing loss in Ames likely ended any hope of a CFP berth.

13. Washington Huskies

Week 7 result: Lost to Oregon 30-27
Up next: vs. Colorado
                                Trend: -7

A second loss for the Huskies has officially ended any possibility of UDub making its second appearance in the CFP. An overtime loss in Eugene is nothing to scoff at — though the committee is unforgiving when it comes to two-loss squads. Washington’s best-case scenario now would be making a run at the Rose Bowl.

12. Florida Gators

Week 7 result: Defeated Vanderbilt 37-27
Up next: BYE
                                Trend: +4

The Gators rallied from a 21-3 deficit to keep their playoff chances alive. Rushers Lamical Perine and Jordan Scarlett carried the Gators to victory. The two backs combined for 234 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Florida now gets to enjoy a bye week before taking on hated rival Georgia.

11. Oklahoma Sooners

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: @ TCU
                        Trend: +4

After his defense allowed a combined 81 points in the teams past two games, defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was relieved of his duties. The Sooners will have an opportunity to work out their kinks against a struggling TCU outfit this upcoming weekend.

10. Oregon Ducks

Week 7 result: Defeated Washington 30-27
Up next: @ Washington State
                               Trend: +4

After knocking off Washington, Oregon represents the Pac-12’s last hope at sending a team to the CFP. The Ducks have no time to celebrate their victory as they have another tall task on the road this week. Washington State has won 15 of its last 17 at home in Pullman.

9. Texas Longhorns

Week 7 result: Defeated Baylor 23-17
                                Up next: BYE
                                Trend: +1

The Longhorns lost starting quarterback Sam Ehlinger to an injured shoulder early in the Baylor game. As a result, the offense struggled for much of the game. The defense ultimately saved the Longhorns from a what would’ve been deflating loss (especially following their triumphant victory over foe Oklahoma). Getting Ehlinger back to full health will be crucial going forward.

8. UCF Knights

Week 7 result: Defeated Memphis 31-30
Up next: @ ECU

The Knights held Memphis scoreless during the second half en route to a comeback victory on the road. UCF has now won 19-straight games. This game coincidentally enough was the first time in which an opponent got within seven points of UCF during the streak.

7. Georgia Bulldogs

Week 7 result: Lost to LSU 36-16
Up next: BYE
                        Trend: -5

A surprisingly poor effort against LSU has the Bulldogs reeling. After dominating each of its first six opponents, Georgia struggled mightily on offense against the Tigers. If they want to reach the CFP again, the Bulldogs must win out.

6. LSU Tigers

Week 7 result: Defeated Georgia 36-16
Up next: vs. Mississippi State
                          Trend: +6

In smashing Georgia, LSU made the biggest statement of the weekend. The Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage — rushing for 275 yards on the day while limiting Georgia to 113. Geaux Tigers.

5. Michigan Wolverines

Week 7 result: Defeated Wisconsin 38-13
Up next: @ Michigan State
                                Trend: +6

While LSU made a statement in the south, Michigan made a statement in the Midwest. In dominating Wisconsin, Michigan has declared itself as a true contender. The Wolverines have three tough games remaining: @ Michigan State, vs. Penn State, @ Ohio State. If they win, they have a great chance at making the College Football Playoff.

4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Week 7 result: Defeated Pittsburgh 19-14
Up next: BYE
                              Trend: +1

The Irish blew out two ranked opponents heading into this past weekend. With that said, Notre Dame subsequently came within five minutes of erasing all of that good work versus a lowly Pitt squad. Nonetheless, Notre Dame remains undefeated. Brian Kelly’s team has a playoff spot all but locked-up as long as they keep winning.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes

Week 7 result: Defeated Minnesota 30-14
Up next: @ Purdue
                           Trend: +1

The Buckeyes seem likely to run the table en route to their showdown with Michigan. QB Dwayne Haskins has continued to play himself into the Heisman Trophy race, and as a result nobody has been capable of slowing the team down.

2. Clemson Tigers

Week 7 result: BYE
Up next: vs. NC State
Trend: +1

NC State represents Trevor Lawrence’s biggest test thus far. The Tigers are a more talented team. They’re playing at home, and should be well-rested coming off their bye. A win would keep Clemson on a path towards a fourth-consecutive trip to the CFP.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

Week 7 result: Defeated Missouri 39-10
Up next: @ Tennessee

Alabama rolled to another victory. However, the Crimson Tide’s seventh win didn’t come without a major scare. Tua Tagovailoa was forced to leave the game after aggravating his sprained knee. After seven weeks, Tua’s Heisman campaign is in full swing. The Hawaiian signal-caller has gone 88-of-123 for 1,760 yards. Tagovailoa also has a sparkling TD-to-INT ratio of 21:0.
