Boston College appears to be in the midst of significant coaching negotiations, with reports suggesting a potential move to bring aboard longtime coach Bill O’Brien.
O’Brien had currently (and briefly) been serving as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. He was hired less than a month ago by head coach Ryan Day. While discussions are said to be progressing positively, nothing has been finalized as of yet. Should the deal come to fruition, it could signal a notable shift for Boston College’s football program.
O’Brien brings with him a wealth of experience from both the collegiate and professional ranks, boasting a track record that underscores his coaching acumen. Throughout his career, O’Brien has been known as an offensive coach — particularly having a penchant for developing quarterbacks (this includes Tom Brady). You’d think O’Brien’s background would be a major selling point for elite high school talent in the Northeast region.
From an optics standpoint, this seems like a very good move for Boston College. They’d be bringing on an accomplished coach who coincidentally enough hails from the state of Massachusetts. O’Brien understands the arena of recruiting having worked at Ohio State, Penn State, and Alabama. Not only that, but you’d assume this could be his dream job of sorts considering this is where he grew up.
Essentially, this program is a blank slate where he can create a culture to his liking, and one which in theory will be competitive in the wide-open ACC.
