Counting Down The 25 Best College Football Rivalries

22. Duke Blue Devils vs. North Carolina Tar Heels

Trophy: Victory Bell
Number of Meetings: 103
Record: North Carolina 59-38-4 (1 UNC forfeit, 2 UNC wins vacated)
Most Memorable Game: 1994, North Carolina 41, Duke 40

These rivals are better known for their meetings on the basketball court, where they’ve alternated winning National Championships for the past 25 years. They’ve also spent the past century meeting on the football field, where they’ve played a few interesting games despite only meeting once as ranked rivals. The best game however was in 1994, where a ranked Duke team fell at home to a solid UNC team when a 60-yard field goal came up short.

21. Alabama Crimson Tide vs. LSU Tigers

Trophy: None
Number of Meetings: 81
Record: Alabama 51-25-5
Most Memorable Game: 2011, LSU 9, Alabama 6

These teams are not natural rivals, but have built up a healthy rivalry through continued meetings as top ranked teams and through coach Nick Saban, who has led each school to titles. These teams even met for a National Championship in 2011, but it was another showdown between the two teams earlier in the year that was the most memorable in the series. In a battle of #1 vs. #2, LSU escaped in Tuscaloosa with a 9-6 overtime win.
