As we get closer and closer to the 2017 NBA Draft, these future professional players are beginning to be introduced into the public eye.
We’ve seen them as players on the court, but the public is now starting to gain insight into the personalities of these individuals. UCLA PG Lonzo Ball is projected to be a top-five pick. His ability to pass the ball is special — as is his penchant for getting his teammates involved. While Ball’s play has garnered plenty of notice, it’s his father — LaVar — who’s stolen all of the headlines with his brash persona and wild takes.
The gregarious father has insulted Charles Barkley on television, predicted that he would beat Michael Jordan 1-on-1, said his son was better than two-time MVP Steph Curry, and has also created a highly-popular brand based upon his three sons (Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo).
To say Ball is controversial would be an understatement. Maybe there is a method to this crazy madness. One can’t dispute the fact that the elder Ball is taking full advantage of the platform created by his immensely talented son.
On Wednesday, Foot Locker released a hilarious commercial featuring expected lottery draft picks Ball, Kentucky PG De’Aaron Fox, Florida State SF Jonathan Isaac, and Duke SF Jayson Tatum. Each spoke about growing up with their fathers, and the activities they’d do with their role models. This commercial surely was geared towards the upcoming Father’s Day holiday on Sunday, and it also enabled the young players to humanize themselves a bit within the media world.
While Fox, Isaac, and Tatum regaled about past times with their respective fathers, Ball was completely dead-panned — instead touching upon all of the outlandish things LaVar has done in the last year:
