Sources: Kenny Atkinson to Join Cavaliers

According to sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers are set to hire Kenny Atkinson as the franchise’s next coach. Atkinson has been an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors since 2021.

In what has been a crazy coaching market in the NBA, Cleveland’s decision is said to have come down to Atkinson and New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego. Borrego, who was also linked to the Los Angeles Lakers opening before JJ Redick was hired, is expected to be in the running for the head coaching job in Detroit.

Atkinson will be taking over a talented team that has reached the postseason two years in a row. This past season, the Cavaliers finished 48-34 and lost to the champion Boston Celtics in the second round. The franchise hopes Atkinson’s experience will be a difference-maker.

Atkinson has coached in the NBA since 2008. The new Cleveland leader began his NBA career as an assistant with the New York Knicks (2008-2012). From there, Atkinson joined the Atlanta Hawks (2012-2016). Following his stay in Atlanta, Atkinson landed his first head coaching gig. In three-plus years with the Brooklyn Nets, Atkinson went 118-190.

The veteran coach briefly joined the LA Clippers as an assistant before heading North to be Steve Kerr’s top assistant with the Golden State Warriors. Following Golden State’s triumph in 2022, Atkinson accepted an offer to become Charlotte’s head coach — however, he soon changed his mind and remained with the Warriors.
