Only weeks removed from a horrific car accident that killed assistant coach Monty Williams’ wife, Ingrid, now shooting guard Dion Waiters is mourning the loss of a loved one. His younger brother was killed in their hometown of Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Waiters took to Instagram to pay tribute to his brother:
Thunder superstar Kevin Durant weighed in on the devastating news, saying, “We feel for Dion. He’s our brother and it’s tough for anyone to go through that, and we have his back on everything. He’s got our love and support throughout it all and he knows we’re here for him.”
Durant continued, “That’s how life throws it at you sometimes. Definitely unfortunate to go through it, but the only thing we can do is continue to stick together as an organization, as a family and help everyone through this. That’s what brings everyone together.”
Oklahoma City (43-20) is set to take on the Los Angeles Clippers (41-21) tonight at Chesapeake Energy Arena – the team they are battling for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
While the game could have major playoff seeding implications, Waiters’ loss serves as another reminder that there are things more important in life than basketball. The 4-year veteran will miss tonight’s game and is expected to take some time away from the team to be with his family.
