For as bad as the Los Angeles Lakers’ season has been, no one has had a worse go of it than shooting guard Nick Young. During the past 11 games, the former USC star hasn’t registered a single minute on the court.
Amid the D’Angelo Russell leaked video of Young admitting to cheating on his fiancé, head coach Byron Scott has deemed it best to keep the streaky scorer on the bench. While there are rumors of tension within the locker room, Scott clarified that team chemistry has nothing to do with Young’s lack of playing time.
“It has everything to do with just basketball,” Scott said. “Right now, I know what he’s going through, and I know it’s hard on him. But he’s not here with us, mentally, and there’s no need for me to put him out there on the floor.”
As Young and Russell try to hash out their issues, it’s probably best for the Lakers that Young not play. The 16th overall pick in the 2007 draft has had a horrendous year, averaging 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists while shooting 34 percent from the field.
“It’s been tough,” Scott said. “He didn’t get off to a great start. His shooting has not been what it has been in the past. It went even a little downhill the last couple months.”
The Lakers can only hope the season ends as quickly as possible. With the draft approaching, Los Angeles is looking forward to receiving a high lottery pick. With fiancé Iggy Azalea still rocking her engagement ring this past week at the IHeartRadio Music Awards, Young and Lakers fans can only hope that everything is on the mend.
