13. Detroit Tigers
2016 record: 86-75
2016 ERA: 4.24 (20th)
2016 Batting Average: .267 (3rd)
2016 OBP: .331 (4th)
2 X-factors in 2017: Michael Fulmer, Justin Upton
Why they will win: The trio at the front of the rotation (Justin Verlander, Jordan Zimmermann, Michael Fulmer) has a chance to carry the Tigers to the postseason. It’s easily amongst the best in the American League. Oh…and they’ve got that Miguel Cabrera guy coming back — along with thumpers Ian Kinsler, Victor Martinez, Justin Upton, J.D. Martinez, and Nick Castellanos.
Why they won’t win: The health of the pitching staff is not a given by any stretch. As it pertains to the lineup, there appears to be a big drop-off towards the bottom half of the order. Upton and Castellanos also strike out a big chunk of the time. This is a category Manager Brad Ausmus surely would like to see an improvement in.
