14. Seattle Mariners
2016 record: 86-76
2016 ERA: 4.00 (27th)
2016 Batting Average: .259 (10th)
2016 OBP: .326 (9th)
2 X-factors in 2017: James Paxton, Kyle Seager
Why they will win: Seattle’s lineup got considerably faster at the top — with the additions of Jean Segura and Jarrod Dyson. The speedsters should be able to set the table quite well for the likes of Kyle Seager, Robinson Cano, and Nelson Cruz. Pitcher James Paxton will take the next step and become a solid No. 2 starter behind “King” Felix Hernandez.
Why they won’t win: The Mariners lack the depth within their rotation to make a deep run. Outside of Hernandez, the options are far from stable. Paxton was the only starter a year ago to finish with a winning record (10-9). Soft-tossers Hisashi Iwakuma and Yovani Gallardo may struggle to keep the ball in even the cavernous Safeco Field.
