The 2008 Phillies finally gave Philadelphians a reason to be proud of one of their sports franchises. The Phillies won the National League East with a 92–70 mark, and then outplayed the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS to qualify for their first World Series since 1993. The Phillies routed the Tampa Bay Rays in five games to claim their second World Series title. Southpaw Cole Hamels was voted the Fall Classic’s MVP for his standout performances on the mound.
