‘The Honey Badger’ has proven to be one of the NFL’s best defensive backs. Whether it’s covering receivers in space, attacking the line of scrimmage, or utilizing his immense ball skills, Mathieu plays much bigger than his 5-foot-9 frame would indicate. It comes as no surprise to learn that Mathieu was a fantastic prep athlete in his native New Orleans. However, one must understand the rather tough upbringing he had. Essentially, it helped in molding Mathieu into the player that he is.
To put it mildly, Mathieu has had a horrific past. Grandparents and uncles have passed away due to drug use, murders, and AIDS. His mother abandoned him shortly after his birth, and his biological father was locked up on a murder charge. Only when Mathieu became a star football player did his father try and be in his life. Hurricane Katrina demolished his uncle’s home (the one Tyrann had be staying at). As a result, the family was homeless for nearly a year. Despite all of this, Mathieu still ended up a fantastic athlete.
