22. The Hustler (1961)
Pictured here are two giants in the film industry. Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason can steal the silver screen individually. When together, there’s a magic which can be nearly impossible to replicate. Newman’s character is a pool hall hustler — traveling from place to place. Gleason’s character was the ‘big dog’ within the pool industry at the time. Of course, both square off in what will be one famous scene. We like this film for its grittiness, but also perspective for the protagonist to come to grips with.
