Now: Karl Urban
While working consistently after The Lord of the Rings wrapped up, Karl Urban’s next major role in fact moved his name further up the credits. 2009, 2013, and 2016 had Urban playing Doctor Leonard McCoy in the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek revival. A far cry from the intense focus of Eomer, Urban was able to stretch his comedic muscles as a crew member in the vacuum of space who can’t help but see the worst in every situation.
2012 gave him one of his first shots at being a leading man in Dredd, where he played the titular law enforcement official who dished out vicious justice. Five years later, Urban joined the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe as the lowly Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok, but it was 2019 that really let things take flight — Urban leads the cast of The Boys, Amazon’s bleak outlook on corrupt superheroes, and the team (led by Urban) that is determined to bring them down to size.
