Shocking Behind-The-Scenes Secrets From The Wizard of Oz

The Munchkin Army

Since The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939, millions of people around the globe have had a soft spot for the Lollipop Guild. The group of munchkins (as they were referred to in the film) played a prominent role once Dorothy (Judy Garland) entered Munchkin Country.

Interestingly enough, 124 different actors were used to play the group of munchkins. Each actor received roughly $50 a week to portray their roles. Filming lasted 24 weeks — which means roughly $160,000 was set aside solely for those who played munchkins on-screen.
