On Thursday morning, Netflix announced that the streaming service will showcase a six-part docuseries centered around the mercurial professional wrestling figure Vince McMahon.
Titled Mr. McMahon, each episode of the series is slated to be one hour in length. It will presumably chronicle McMahon’s building of WWE as a brand — along with his precipitous fall from grace following allegations of sexual misconduct featuring a former employee. The project is the brainchild of pop culture savant Bill Simmons and filmmaker Chris Smith. Smith had previously worked on the hit show Tiger King. This docuseries had reportedly been worked on for more than three years.
Smith had this to say about the project:
“The goal behind Mr. McMahon was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world. Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations. The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind.”
McMahon has not been involved with the company in any real capacity for quite some time. His real-life son-in-law, Paul Levesque (aka Triple H) has taken over the creative elements of the programming. McMahon, who resigned from the company board this past January, is facing a reported lawsuit with accusations of physical abuse, sexual assault, and sex trafficking.
Mr. McMahon will debut on Sept. 25th.
