An unfortunate phenomenon which occurs in collecting is that the value of certain items can significantly increase following the original artist’s demise. This is such the case with all first edition copies of Where the Wild Things Are. In 2012, the author of the famed children’s book — Maurice Sendak — passed away at the age of 83. Following his death, the average price of a first edition version skyrocketed. An online book store reported that it had sold a signed copy for $25,000 in May of 2012.
