One of the most cherished bands of the past 20 years, Coldplay didn’t always go by their universally-known name. Group founders Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland both attended University College London. While in school, Martin and Buckland formed a band named Pectoralz. When they realized that probably wasn’t a great name, they switched to Starfish. Starfish isn’t as bad as Pectoralz, but Martin and Co. are surely happy that their schoolmate — Tim Crompton — decided the name Coldplay wasn’t fitting for his own band, and instead thought it fit Martin and Buckland more. Now, 22 years later, Coldplay is an internationally known name thanks to their incredible talents and Crompton’s decision to abandon the name.
