NFL Week 5 Power Rankings

Here’s a look at New Arena’s NFL Power Rankings heading into Week 5:

32. Buffalo Bills

Week 4 result: Lost to Green Bay 22-0
Up Next: vs. Tennessee
                                Trend: -1

A week after stunning the rest of the league by hammering the Vikings in Minnesota, the Bills reverted back to the team most pundits expected them to be. Josh Allen threw two interceptions and was sacked seven times. Buffalo struggled to gain any traction on the ground as well, as three players combined for only 58 yards. The Bills have been outscored by 77 points in their three losses.

31. Arizona Cardinals

Week 4 result: Lost to Seattle 20-17
Up Next: @ San Francisco
                           Trend: +1

In Josh Rosen’s first career start the Cardinals finally showed signs of life offensively. Rosen’s touchdown pass to Chad Williams tied the game with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, Seattle claimed the victory on a last-second field goal. Rosen led the Cardinals to a season-high 17 points — a good start for the promising rookie.

30. New York Jets

Week 4 result: Lost to Jacksonville 31-12
                                Up Next: vs. Denver
                                Trend: -2

The glow from their Week 1 victory over the Lions is beginning to fade quickly. The Jets have now lost their last three games — the latest coming by way of a lifeless performance against the Jaguars. An improved Sam Darnold and a consistent rushing attack could lead to a victory this week over the Broncos.

29. San Francisco 49ers

Week 4 result: Lost to Los Angeles Chargers 29-27
                                Up Next: vs. Arizona
                                Trend: -2

A season that started with a good amount of promise has quickly taken a turn for the worse. The 49ers put up a valiant effort against the Chargers but came up just short. With their starting quarterback and running back out for the year, it may be time for San Francisco to punt on this season.

28. New York Giants

Week 4 result: Lost to New Orleans 33-18
Up Next: @ Carolina
                               Trend: -2

For the third time in four games the Giants failed to score 20 points. OBJ has been limited to 331 yards and zero touchdowns through four weeks. If the Giants want to compete this season they must find a way to get the ball downfield. Unfortunately, their upcoming schedule is brutal — @ Carolina, vs. Philadelphia, @ Atlanta.

27. Oakland Raiders

Week 4 result: Defeated Cleveland 45-42
Up Next: @ Los Angeles Chargers
Trend: +2

Jon Gruden is finally back in the win column. After blowing a lead in each of their first three games, Gruden and the Raiders rallied to upend the Browns in Oakland. Technically the Raiders will be playing on the road this week, but in all reality the crowd at StubHub Center will be predominantly supporting the Silver and Black. The Raiders shouldn’t be favored, but don’t be shocked if they pull of the upset over their division rival.

26. Houston Texans

Week 4 result: Defeated Indianapolis 37-34
Up Next: vs. Dallas
Trend: +4

Arguably the most disappointing team in football at the quarter pole, the Texans are lucky to have secured their first victory of the season. After blowing an 18-point lead in the second half, Houston scored the final six points of overtime to take home the W. The Colts’ decision to go for it on fourth down from inside their own territory backfired — giving the Texans ideal field position to kick the game-winning field goal.

25. Detroit Lions

Week 4 result: Lost to Dallas 26-24
Up Next: vs. Green Bay
                             Trend: -3

After Matthew Stafford orchestrated an excellent drive to give Detroit the lead with a little more than two minutes remaining, Detroit’s defense failed to bring the game home for the snake-bit franchise. Stafford’s brilliance was only outdone by Zeke Elliott’s effort for the Cowboys. The Lions now face a must-win situation at home this week. A fourth loss in five weeks could end any hope of a playoff run.

24. Cleveland Browns

Week 4 result: Lost to Oakland 45-42
Up Next: vs. Baltimore
                              Trend:

Baker Mayfield had some good moments, but ultimately made costly mistakes in a narrow loss to the Raiders. The No. 1 pick threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns. However, the electric QB committed four turnovers — two interceptions and two lost fumbles. If Mayfield doesn’t take better care of the ball against Baltimore, the Browns will be in for a long night.

23. Indianapolis Colts

Week 4 result: Lost to Houston 37-34
Up Next: @ New England
                       Trend:

Even though the Colts weren’t able to secure their second victory of the season, the franchise has a lot to be happy about entering Week 5. For the first time this year, Andrew Luck looked like his former self. Luck appeared to be more comfortable throwing the ball downfield, resulting in a huge performance — 464 yards and four touchdowns.

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Week 4 result: Lost to Chicago 48-10
Up Next: BYE
                          Trend: -6

The Bucs are beginning to look like who we thought they were. Two surprising wins to open the season have been followed by two humbling losses. The Bucs were absolutely crushed by the Bears from the opening whistle. Jameis Winston replaced Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second half, and has already been named the starter for Week 6. Fitzmagic was fun while it lasted.

21. Dallas Cowboys

Week 4 result: Defeated Detroit 26-24
Up Next: @ Houston
Trend: +4

Thanks to Zeke Elliott the Cowboys’ were able to overcome a determined Detroit unit. Elliott ran for 152 yards and hauled in an additional 88 through the passing game. Dallas has a good opportunity to climb above .500 this week as they visit the disappointing Texans.

20. Seattle Seahawks

Week 4 result: Defeated Arizona 20-17
Up Next: vs. Los Angeles Rams
                                Trend: +1
Earl Thomas’ worst nightmare became reality in Arizona this past weekend. Thomas, who has been asking for a higher salary for the better part of a year, broke his leg late in the game and is now out for the season. Things don’t get much better for the Seahawks this week, as the explosive LA Rams come to town in search of their fifth-straight win to start the season.

19. Washington Redskins

Week 4 result: BYE
Up Next:
@ New Orleans
Trend: +1

A bizarre scheduling quirk has given the Redskins a ton of time to prepare for the Saints. By virtue of playing Monday night, the ‘Skins will have had 15 days to prepare for New Orleans. In an effort to keep the Saints explosive offense off the field, look for Washington to run the ball a ton in hopes of controlling the clock.

18. Denver Broncos

Week 4 result: Lost to Kansas City 27-23
Up Next: @ New York Jets
                                Trend: +1

The Broncos have now dropped two in a row following their heartbreaking loss to Kansas City. After leading for the majority of the game, Denver surrendered two touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the fourth. Case Keenum missed an open receiver in the waning moments on what would have been a game-winning touchdown pass. A short week combined with a cross-country flight might spell trouble for the Broncos this weekend.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers

Week 4 result: Lost to Baltimore 26-14
Up Next: vs. Atlanta
                        Trend: -5
It might be time to panic in Pittsburgh. A lifeless start to the season could have been excused if the Steelers put forth a good performance against their rivals. However, Baltimore came to Heinz Field and shut down Pittsburgh’s attack for most of the game. After fighting back from a 14-0 deficit to tie the score at half, the Steelers gained a total of 47 yards in the second half. This week’s matchup with Atlanta is a must-win.

16. Miami Dolphins

Week 4 result: Lost to New England 38-7
                               Up Next: @ Cincinnati
                               Trend: -6

Miami entered Week 4 with an opportunity to put distance between themselves and the Patriots. Instead, the previously undefeated Dolphins were embarrassed in a 38-7 thrashing. Ryan Tannehill could only muster 100 yards through the air and the rushing game never got going as well. Miami may have blown their chance to potentially win the AFC East.

15. Atlanta Falcons

Week 4 result: Lost to Cincinnati 37-36
Up Next: @ Pittsburgh
                         Trend: -8

Regardless of their 1-3 record, the Falcons remain one of the most dangerous teams in football. Injuries have ravaged Atlanta’s defense. Opponents are scoring at will against a Falcons team that sorely misses Deion Jones and Keanu Neal
. The Falcons are in for a fight this weekend as they travel to Pittsburgh to play an equally desperate team. A 1-4 start would likely be too much to overcome in a loaded NFC.

14. Green Bay Packers

Week 4 result: Defeated Buffalo 22-0
Up Next: @ Detroit
                                Trend: +3

In spite of their shutout victory over the hapless Bills, Aaron Rodgers was none too pleased after the game. The superstar quarterback seemingly questioned the offensive game plan and put an onus on the coaching staff to do better. Expect Rodgers to come out firing this weekend in Detroit as the Packers look to stay ahead of both the Lions and Vikings in the NFC North.

13. Tennessee Titans

Week 4 result: Defeated Philadelphia 26-23
Up Next: @ Buffalo
                               Trend: +5

After stunning the defending champion Eagles in overtime this past weekend, the Titans have now won three games in a row following their bizarre Week 1 contest in Miami. Tennessee has a great chance to notch their fourth straight win this weekend. If Marcus Mariota can continue to play like he did this past week, the Titans’ shouldn’t have too much of a problem reaching the playoffs.

12. Los Angeles Chargers

Week 4 result: Defeated San Francisco 29-27
                                Up Next: vs. Oakland
                                Trend: -1

The Chargers may be 2-2, but they aren’t close to playing their best football. Albeit their two losses have come against two of the best teams thus far (Chiefs and Rams), the Chargers’ lackadaisical start has been underwhelming. A trendy pick to win the AFC, LA has struggled defensively (30.0 PPG), and as a result they are already two games behind the Chiefs in the West.

11. Cincinnati Bengals

Week 4 result: Defeated Atlanta 37-36
Up Next: vs. Miami
                             Trend: +4

The Bengals must be pleased with where they stand after four games. Sitting at 3-1 and tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North, Cincinnati appears to be legit. Losing Tyler Eifert for the rest of the season is certainly a blow, but reinforcements are on their way. Starting running back Joe Mixon has returned to practice and star linebacker Vontaze Burfict is back with the team following his four game suspension.

10. Chicago Bears

Week 4 result: Defeated Tampa Bay 48-10
Up Next: BYE
                                Trend: +4

The 48 points Chicago put on the board against Tampa Bay were the most points the Bears have scored since 2013. Out of all the teams that have played four games, only the Jaguars have allowed fewer points (56) than the Bears (65). If Mitchell Trubisky takes care of the ball and continues to make plays in the passing game, Chicago may be headed for their best season since 2012.

9. Minnesota Vikings

Week 4 result: Lost to Los Angeles Rams 38-31
Up Next: @ Philadelphia
                      Trend: -1

The Vikings may have come up short against the Rams, but the sky isn’t falling in Minnesota. While the Vikings’ vaunted defense continues to struggle, their offense has been potent in three of their four games. Kirk Cousins has thrown 10 touchdown passes and is closing in on 1,400 yards. If the Vikings can’t figure it out this week in Philadelphia, it may be time to get concerned about the team. Until then, this is still one of the most talented teams in football and they should be given the benefit of the doubt.

8. Carolina Panthers

Week 4 result: BYE
Up Next: vs. New York Giants
                                Trend: -2

The biggest news to come out of Carolina this past week was the signing of Eric Reid. Reid is a former Pro Bowler and should be a good addition to their secondary. With Atlanta struggling and Tampa Bay reeling, Carolina has an opportunity to put distance between themselves and the bottom of their division. The Panthers’ offense hasn’t been great as of yet, but the potential is there for the unit to explode.

7. New England Patriots

Week 4 result: Defeated Miami 38-7
                                Up Next: vs. Indianapolis
                                Trend: +2

Week 4 demonstrated why it is never smart to count the Patriots out until they are mathematically eliminated. A week after only scoring 10 points in Detroit, New England put up 38 points on the board against the Dolphins before taking their foot off the gas. Julian Edelman’s return this week should give the Pats offense a much needed shot in the arm.

6. Baltimore Ravens

Week 4 result: Defeated Pittsburgh 26-14
                                Up Next: @ Cleveland
                                Trend: +7

The Ravens are a complete football team. They are scoring a lot of points (123) and allowing very few (65). They possess the most accurate kicker in NFL history (Justin Tucker) and Joe Flacco has seemingly found his groove following a down year. The Ravens should be the betting favorite in the AFC North.

5. Philadelphia Eagles

Week 4 result: Lost to Tennessee 26-23
                                Up Next: vs. Minnesota                                                                                                                                        Trend:

Carson Wentz threw two touchdowns passes, accrued 350 yards through the air, and the running backs averaged 5.3 YPC. However, the Eagles blew a 17-3 lead and ended up losing to the Titans in overtime. Philly appears to be marred in a Super Bowl hangover. A marquee matchup with Minnesota awaits this weekend in a game that has almost become a must-win for both teams.

4. New Orleans Saints

Week 4 result: Defeated New York Giants 33-18
Up Next: vs. Washington
                    Trend:

The Saints’ defensive unit did well in shutting down the Giants’ putrid offense, giving the franchise their third victory of the season. Alvin Kamara and Drew Brees continue to be a terrifying duo, and Michael Thomas is still among the top-5 in the league in receiving.  On the verge of history, Brees will enter Monday night with a ton of motivation.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 4 result: Defeated New York Jets 31-12
Up Next: @ Kansas City
                              Trend:

Jacksonville played angry against the Jets following their disappointing loss to Tennessee the week prior. The Jags have now held three opponents to 15 points or less through four weeks. However, the defense will face its greatest test of the season against the Chiefs this week. Slowing down Patrick Mahomes will be difficult, but the Jags feature the best defense in football and will be determined to prove it this weekend.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

Week 4 result: Defeated Denver 27-23
Up Next: vs. Jacksonville
                                Trend:

Patrick Mahomes showed that he can overcome adversity for the first time in his young career. Facing a good Denver defense at Mile High on Monday night, Mahomes led the Chiefs back from a 10-point deficit with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. Mahomes made exceptional plays throughout the final quarter, and punctuated his night with a game-winning drive with just under two minutes left. Jacksonville’s defense provides the toughest test of his career in a game that everybody will be paying close attention to.

1. Los Angeles Rams

Week 4 result: Defeated Minnesota 38-31
Up Next: @ Seattle
                               Trend:

The Rams’ offense ran up and down the field with ease against Minnesota’s highly-touted defense. Led by Jared Goff (465 yards, 5 TDs) and Cooper Kupp (162 yards, 2 TDs), Los Angeles’ attack was lethal all night. LA has separated themselves from the rest of the league, and they only seem to be getting better.
