Ranking The Best College Football Quarterbacks In 2017

20. Jarrett Stidham: Auburn

We're projecting a bit on Stidham. He was once a big-time prospect coming out of high school. As a freshman at Baylor, Stidham threw for 1,265 yards and 12 touchdowns in a reserve role. He also completed passes at an eye-popping 68.8-percent clip. Due to the scandal surrounding then-head coach Art Briles, Stidham transferred from the program -- ultimately ending up at Auburn. While he's not the running threat Cam Newton or Nick Marshall were, Stidham does possess enough athleticism to keep opposing defenses honest in read-option situations. Above all else, he's exceptional as it pertains to gunning the ball downfield. The Texas native can make throws to all parts of the field. This is a welcomed change for head coach Gus Malzahn -- as the program's been beset by both injury and inconsistency at the position in recent years. Assuming Stidham can stay healthy, there's a real chance that Auburn will be the main challenger in attempting to usurp the SEC West crown away from Alabama.

19. Brett Rypien: Boise State

The nephew of former NFL QB Mark Rypien, Brett has carved out a nice niche for himself on the blue turf. The 6'2" gunslinger out of Washington has been a revelation since taking the post as the team's starting quarterback. He led Boise State to a 9-win season as a true freshman. Rypien then followed that up with a 10-win season in 2016. During this two-year stint, Rypien has accrued 44 touchdowns and 6,999 yards through the air. As evidenced in the clip above, he's got tremendous touch and accuracy on his deep-ball throws. Rypien's ability to make those around him better gives Boise State a real shot at winning not only the Mountain Division, but also the Mountain West Conference title in 2017.

18. Kyle Allen: Houston

Allen comes to Houston after transferring in from Texas A&M. Formerly a 5-star recruit, the Arizona native did enjoy some success during a two-year period in College Station. He threw for a combined 33 touchdowns and 3,532 yards. Turmoil seeped through the Aggies' program at the time. Both Allen and fellow signal-caller Kyler Murray decided to play elsewhere. Now with the Cougars, Allen is performing under the tutelage of former QB Major Applewhite. Known for his developmental skills, Applewhite should further Allen's game even more. The 6'3" junior has a big arm, and should be able to form a nice rapport with the immensely talented pass-catching duo of Linell Bonner and Steven Dunbar.

17. Will Grier: West Virginia

After a rocky exit from Florida, Grier finds himself in Dana Holgorsen's pass-happy offense. People forget that Grier led the Gators to a Top-10 ranking in 2015...until he was suspended for unknowingly taking a banned supplement. A fiery competitor, Grier routinely stood in the pocket and delivered the ball downfield. He was also more mobile than people gave him credit for. Grier would take off and pick up positive yardage when the play broke down. At the time of his suspension, the North Carolina native had accrued 1,204 yards passing and 10 touchdowns through six games. With Skyler Howard out of the picture, it's Grier's job to lose. Holgorsen's proclivity for the offensive side of the ball gives Grier a real shot at garnering all-conference honors this season.
