Counting Down The 25 Best College Football Rivalries

25. Kansas Jayhawks vs. Kansas State Wildcats

Trophy: Governor’s Cup
Number of Meetings: 113
Record: Kansas 64-44-5
Most Memorable Game: 1987, 17-17 Tie

Neither of these two franchises is the most storied in college football, but they sure have played a lot, meeting every year since 1902 (except 1910). These teams have each had their moments over the past century, but have never had simultaneous good seasons that led to a memorable showdown. The most memorable game is in fact one that has been called “The Toilet Bowl,” a 17-17 tie between 1-7 Kansas and 0-8 Kansas State.

24. Indiana Hoosiers vs. Purdue Boilermakers

Trophy: Old Oaken Bucket
Number of Meetings: 118
Record: Purdue 72-40-6
Most Memorable Game: 1967, Indiana 19, Purdue 14

These cross-state rivals have played as many games as nearly any two teams in college football. These teams have rarely been at the top of the Big Ten through their century plus together, but one meeting in particular in 1967 featured major stakes: a trip to the Rose Bowl. Indiana held on against the Boilermakers 19-14 to win the game, the championship, and a trip to the Rose Bowl.

23. Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Arizona Wildcats

Trophy: Territorial Cup
Number of Meetings: 90
Record: Arizona 49-40-1
Most Memorable Game: 1975, Arizona State 24, Arizona 21

These teams have been playing football since the 19th century, before Arizona even became a state. Through their time together in the Pac 8, Pac 10, and now Pac 12, they have played several notable contests. The most memorable came in 1975, when an undefeated Sun Devils team held off a ranked Wildcats team 24-21. They finished the year undefeated and ranked #2 in the nation.
